The Hateful Eight Review

This is a stereotypical Quentin Tarantino film and if you love his movies, you're going to love this. Similarly, if you love Django Unchained, you're going to love The Hateful Eight as it's similar in ways.

Shot in the Ultra Panavision 70 format - which was last properly used in the Fifties and Sixties - it uses the archaic cameras to capture the long, magnificent opening scene. The cinematographer, Robert Richardson deserves an award for his work during this film; the cinematography is superb during the first chapter. Same goes to the composer, Ennio Morricone who's score during the entire film is a piece of art. He captures the western theme perfectly.

The three hour and seven minute film is divided into chapters which adds a brilliant touch to separate the different parts of the story. There is also a nice narrative by the director himself, where Tarantino does a voiceover to describe a party of the story; maybe it wasn't needed but it added a nice touch.

The all star cast is Samuel L Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, Kurt Russell as John Ruth, Jennifer Jason Leigh as the black-eyed Daisy Domergue, Tim Roth as the very British Oswaldo Mobray, Michael Madson as the stereotypical cowboy, Joe Gage, Walton Goggins as the soon-to-be Sheriff of Red Rock, Sheriff Chris Mannix, Bruce Dern as General Sanford Smithers and Demián Bichir as Bob.

The problem with such a long film is that you have to make sure that every moment is captivating otherwise you're going to lose your audience and they're going to get bored. There were only very few of these moments where time seemed to go very slow but for the rest of the two and three quarter hours, it was suspenseful and crazy.

The Hateful Eight starts out with John Ruth, O.B Jackson (James Parks) and Daisy Domergue riding in a carriage through a blizzard in Wyoming on the way to Red Rock so Ruth can hang Domergue for murder.

On their way, fellow bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren stumbles across the carriage where he asks Ruth if he can ride with them so he can also escort his dead to Red Rock. The three of them plus O.B also come across Chris Mannix and reluctantly let him ride with them.

45 minutes later and they come to Minnie's Haberdashery where they meet the other 5 men.

The plot unfolds as a whodunnit and Cluedo type of film where gore and expletives are thrown in for the fun of it and the casual expression of n**** is a typical in a Tarantino film but the racism almost becomes the subplot of the film.

The rest of the movie is set in the Haberdashery and feels like a theatre production with the one room settings and pushing in a group of people who don't know each other together. Basically a recipe for disaster.

Tarantino pulls it off and this is a brilliant film; even though it's slow at times and more gore was expected, it was a breathtaking piece of work.

Shadowhunters Pilot Episode Review

Based on the bestselling series by Cassandra Clare, this disappointing first episode doesn't live up to it's amazing paper counter-part.

There were high hopes for the Shadowhunters TV show and the 2013 film: The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones, was better than the TV show - which is apparently saying something since the film was a flop at the cinemas (personally, I liked it).

The first few minutes of the pilot episode were like an action music video, introducing three of the main characters - Jace Wayland (Dominic Sherwood), Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia) and Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) - whilst blasting pop music until your ears bleed.

#SQUAD

After the opening few minutes, it's a bumpy road for the rest of the episode. The scenes with Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) and Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) are just about watchable, with their casual conversations and Simon hinting that he's in love with Clary. Rosende is probably one of the better actors in the pilot. Even though he's not one of the main characters, he steps up to the plate to take on the slack that the other actors have left.

The acting just doesn't seem to be brilliant. They seem stiff. Now of course, it's the pilot episode and nearly every pilot episode is bumpy and not the best, but the acting shouldn't be bad. It just shouldn't be. The one line that seems to be the worst of all is when Katherine McNamara grabs ahold of a demon (she has no idea) and says "somebody works out. Cool contacts." As a viewer, you're just staring at the screen, mouth agape and just screaming "NO! NO! NO!" It's more of a bad script than anything. There's only so much actors can do with a bad script. But that was just one example where you just want to facepalm at the bad lines and acting.

The worst of all is the club scene in Pandemonium. Again, pop music blasting and it's too fast-paced, there's too much going on and it's hard to keep up. This seems to be a regular occurrence throughout the episode. Too much happens, we're introduced to too many characters and it ruins it.

The "oops I accidentally stabbed someone" move

Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr) is introduced and so is Valentine Morgernstern (Alan Van Sprang) and it's too early to introduce these characters. It's the pilot episode! The writers need to remember that they aren't doing a movie, they don't have 90 minutes to tell a story. They have 13 episodes. That's pretty much 13 hours. They can take their time, they can have the first story just setting up the first few main characters and then have the second, third and fourth episodes slowly bringing in the extra characters.

Alan Van Sprang as Valentine Morgenstern

Even though most of it is negative, the casting is brilliant. They got it right for the 2013 film and they've got it right for Shadowhunters. I was particularly impressed with the casting for Magnus Bane; Harry Shum Jr is brilliant so far at depicting the character.

The pilot episode was a fail, even though it raked in a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.82 million viewers in the U.S alone. Obviously the hype was too much. We'll have to see what the ratings are like for the second episode.

Hopefully, the show will come back and be brilliant like it should be. The second episode has to be better. It has to be. They tried to cover too much ground in the first episode so let's hope they slow it down for the next couple of episodes.

Krampus Review

You would think that the Christmas holiday is the happiest, most wonderful holiday of the year. A holiday where you and all of your loved ones come together to celebrate family and friends.

No. Not in this film.

Krampus is about a family who haven't been blessed with getting along and once extended family come to the door of Tom (Adam Scott) and Sarah (Toni Collette), things start to turn a bit a bit sour With Uncle Howard (David Koechner) and Aunt Dorothy (Conchata Ferell) jabbing at Tom, Sarah and their family, everyone loses it. After Max (Emjay Anthony) has written his letter to Santa Claus asking for their family to get along and then realises that he will never get his wish, he tears the letter up and throws it out of his window. Which is when things start to get nasty. Krampus comes to town.

This is a fantastic film, at times the lighting is bad but you hardly notice. One of the brilliant things about this film - and a lot of people would disagree - is the very beginning. The opening credits. It shows a hoard of people racing into a mega store and fighting over Christmas decorations and presents. People are getting punched, crying and screaming and it's perfect. Because it's true. Christmas shopping is a horrible nightmare, it's chaos and it gets people down. It couldn't have set up the characters and their family environment any better.

Another fantastic element of Krampus is when Omi (Krista Sadler) is telling a story about her experience with the anti-Santa when she was a child. Instead of showing her past with realism and actual cast members, it's shown through animation and the animation is brilliant. It diverted away from the usual way of showing flashback and it added a good twist.

The monsters are brilliant bur warning! If you don't like clowns, dolls, or toys coming to life, then don't watch this film (I'm scared of both clowns and dolls so I was cowering in my seat). Krampus himself was extraordinary. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken. It wasn't scary but it was well done.

The ending! It was a huge plot twist. You think that everything is ok, everything is going to be fine, they're one happy family and they're going to finally enjoy their Christmas but again, this film surprises the audience and does something that you're not going to expect.

Overall, this film is incredible. It's not perfect (the comical gingerbread men were a bit too much of a push) but it's got a brilliant cast from a range of genres, it's got the jump-scares and it's a good horror/comedy Christmas film.

Download Announce One More Band for 2016 Festival

Lawnermower Deth are the next band to be announced for Download festival 2016.

They self-confirmed their appearance on Simon Mayo's BBC Radio 2 Show and since it seems as if many people haven't heard of them, then I'm guessing a little YouTubing of the band is going to be underway over the next few months.

Download festival 2016 will also be featuring Gutterdammerung. Never heard of it? It's a rock and roll/film/gig concept from Belgian-Swedish, Bjorn Tagemose. It will feature some of the biggest rock names on the planet.

This year, it will follow a traditional 1920's Hollywood classical movie. It will feature a live rock band and special effects from the film being exploded all around the audience whilst the band is playing.

The film is going to be set in a world where God has saved the world from all sin by taking the Devil's 'Grail of Sin' (The Evil Guitar) away from Earth. The Earth is now pure. Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll is not allowed. Vicious (Iggy Pop) - who is a "punk-angel" in heaven - looks down upon Earth, sees that it's boring and sends The Evil Guitar back to Earth. Henry Rollins plays an evil puritan priest and tries to manipulate a girl into getting and destroying the guitar. Whilst on the journey to locate the Devil's Grail of Sin, she encounters some of the world's most evil rock and roll individuals.

The cast include: Iggy Pop, Grace Jones, Henry Rollins, Jesse Hughes, Lemmy, Tom Araya, Volbeat, Mark Lanegan, Joshua Homme, Justice, Slash and Nina Hagen.

Sounds awesome doesn't it? It's very different and very cool...
